19th February 2002 - Hook & Glove v Green Dragon

DRAGON LEAVES HOOK AND GLOVE CAULDRON WITH ALL THREE POINTS!

Simon on the spot says:

The Singles

Tony lost, Paul won, Peachey lost, Rich lost, Geoff lost, Simon lost, Horse won, Martin H won (losing 5 - 3).

The Doubles

Tony and Paul won, Peachey & Rich won, Geoff and Simon won, Horse & Martin H lost (drawing 6 all).

The Fours

Won both 4's (winning 10 - 6).

The Eight

Won eight (won 13 - 6. 3 points).

Now for the interesting bit: -

The Dragon was mentally prepared for an anticipated raucous (will Ed please check spelling! Corrected. Thanks Spellchecker! Ed.) occasion, following their "performance" at the Dragon, and also warnings from other teams! We were not disappointed as they tried to be as intimidating as possible. In a very small room, and with the opposition shouting at every opportunity and generally jumping around in front of the board (including in the middle of our throws), the Dragon players held their nerve for a magnificent 3 point victory.

Despite slumping to a 5 - 1 deficit in the singles, every player deserves credit for this result, which may even put us top of the league!

Horse and Martin H started the revival by winning their vital singles, and suddenly we were only 5 - 3 behind.

A tremendous performance followed whereby we won everything except one double, with Simon hitting the pressure double in the 2nd four to clinch the match (despite, or perhaps because of,  being stone cold sober), and Tony capping the night with double tops in the eights to clinch all three points (also "relatively" sober).

The second four was actually stopped for 2 or 3 minutes right in the middle of the game! The scorer decided to draw love hearts and the like all over the chalk board after their bloke hit a ton or something. Unfortunately for him, it was Martin H who was stood at the oche patiently waiting for him to stop so he could throw. When he did stop, Martin was at the bar buying a pint, and we all had to wait for him! Fair play - it certainly calmed things down a bit (and really pissed them off!)

Our top of the table rivals, The Dusthole, lost 3-0 here recently, which puts this result into even higher perspective (does that make sense, Ed? Hardly anyone will ever read it Simon so I don't think it matters too much! I think you mean that the result is doubly significant or something of that ilk. Ed.).

No individual stats this week, as this was truly a team performance and should be left as such.

On a more personal team note, our Editor and long time servant, Rogan, has recently announced his engagement to the lovely Nicole, who I understand came all the way over from New Zealand having seen his photo on this very website! If he doesn't edit this out of the report, our congratulations to them both! (PS. I didn't tell anyone on the night as I thought this might be a good way for them to find out! Well, Geoff anyway, as he's the only one who reads it. Geoff, print this out and bring it to the next match! Make it big type as 7 out of 8 of our team need glasses, and none of them bring them to the match! How good would we be if they did!
